Thales Watchkeeper WK450

The Thales Watchkeeper WK450 is a tactical intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance unmanned aircraft system developed by Thales for the British Army. Based on the Hermes 450 platform, Watchkeeper was designed to provide ground forces with real-time imagery and target information.

Its sensor suite combines electro-optical and thermal cameras with synthetic aperture radar and GMTI capabilities, allowing operations during the day, at night and in poor-visibility conditions. The radar can detect movement across very large areas, while the camera and laser systems support target identification, range measurement and the transfer of targeting information to other assets when required.

Watchkeeper is not limited to the aircraft itself. It operates as a system of systems that includes air vehicles, ground control stations, launch and recovery equipment and ground data terminals. The intelligence it produces can be distributed to commanders, analysts and troops in the field. The British Army has used the platform in Afghanistan, as well as in exercises and surveillance activities on NATO’s eastern flank.

According to the Plarok database, the WK450 has a maximum speed of 77 knots, a range of 150 kilometres, an endurance of 14 hours and a service ceiling of 16,000 feet. Its primary role is not armed attack but deep reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and precision intelligence support.
