Demonstrator
The Dassault nEUROn is a European UCAV technology demonstrator developed under the leadership of Dassault Aviation with the participation of France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Greece and Switzerland. Rather than being intended as a production combat aircraft, the programme was created to validate European expertise in low observability, autonomous flight, mission management and weapons integration.
Focused on reduced radar visibility, nEUROn combines high-level flight control with an internal weapons bay. The aircraft was designed to perform autonomous missions using high-level commands from a ground control system. The release of a real air-to-ground weapon from its internal bay became one of the programme’s most important test milestones.
The nEUROn made its first flight on 1 December 2012 at Istres, France. Later campaigns evaluated low-observable characteristics, flight-control functions, weapon release and the integration of different mission systems. The programme was intended to develop the technology and design expertise required for Europe’s future combat-air systems rather than to field an operational unmanned fighter.
According to the Plarok database, the Dassault nEUROn has a maximum speed of 530 knots, a service ceiling of 40,000 feet and an approximate payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms. The aircraft is not an active operational UAS but a technology demonstrator that helped establish the foundations for future European unmanned combat-aircraft programmes.
