CASC CH-5 (Rainbow 5)

The CASC CH-5 Rainbow 5 is a multi-role MALE-class unmanned aircraft developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). One of the largest members of the Rainbow family, the platform was designed for long- endurance intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and precision-strike missions.

The CH-5’s large wing and high payload capacity allow it to carry multiple sensors and mission systems during persistent ISR missions. Electro-optical/infrared cameras, radar and laser-targeting systems can support the detection and tracking of targets. In armed configurations, the aircraft can carry precision-guided munitions and anti-tank missiles.

The platform can be configured for either reconnaissance or armed missions according to operational requirements. Open-source reporting indicates that the CH-5 may remain airborne for up to 60 hours in reconnaissance configurations, while armed missions generally provide shorter endurance. The difference depends on weapon weight, fuel load and mission profile.

According to the Plarok database, the CH-5 has a maximum speed of 260 knots, a cruise speed of 150 knots, a range of approximately 10,000 kilometres, an endurance of 60 hours and a service ceiling of 30,000 feet. Its 1,000-kilogram payload capacity makes the Rainbow 5 one of China’s largest and longest-endurance armed UAV platforms.
